about the artist

My background in graphic design and children’s art education has been a great asset

as I design handmade whimsical, functional and decorative ceramic pieces. I am drawn to simple forms that can be enhanced using rich colors, patterns and textures infused with a little “attitude.”

After graduating from Syracuse University with a BFA in graphic design, I worked as an art director in a corporate setting. As technology changed and design was done more on computers, I found that I missed the experience of working with my hands.  It was at this time that I began teaching multimedia art classes to children at a community art center. The collaboration with other instructors and the magical thinking of young artists fueled my creativity. It was here that my passion for clay flourished.

I now commit much of my time to working in my home studio.  All of my pieces are hand built, starting with individual hand rolled slabs of clay. With a deep love of nature, derived from family time spent in Maine, I am drawn to simple forms that can be enhanced using patterns and textures infused with a little “attitude.” Taking inspiration from the children I work with and the animated characters that they enjoy, many of my pieces are designed to have a life-like quality. My background in design has been a great asset as I’ve explored color, texture and form.  After much experimentation, I have found an array of rich colored glazes that compliment the textures used in my work.  Using both high and low-fire clay, I design whimsical, functional and decorative pieces.
